Agronomist and organic farmer, Fernando Funes Monzoto, has traveled to all continents and more than 40 countries imagining how agriculture can be done in another way. He observed people's resistance to innovation in agriculture, which is one of the most difficult activities.
"To be a farmer and to live in the countryside implies a lot of commitment, a lot of care. You have to admit that you are not the center of it all. The center is nature, the ecosystem, the natural equilibrium, from there you create balances.” — Fernando Funes Monzoto
SO MUCH BIGGER THAN FARM-TO-TABLE
On an island where 60% to 80% of food is imported, sustainable farming is essential to feed families facing increasing shortages. What Finca Marta does is so much bigger than 'farm-to-table' as a luxury experience. Finca Marta supplies knowledge, self-sufficiency, and creates balance with the ecosystem.
FINCA MARTA SUSTAINABLE FARM TOUR
Our Finca Marta experience takes guests on a mini excursion to the countryside just outside Havana. We chat with agronomist and organic farmer Fernando about the origins of sustainable farming in Cuba, the professional and human challenges of being a farmer today, then off to the fields that sit on 8 hectares of land to pick fresh ingredients for a delicious communal lunch.
Fernando, his family and around 28 farmers grow and cultivate over 120 varieties of produce ranging from bitter oranges, endives, escarole, arugula, green and red lettuce, cucumber, carrot, radishes, green and red chard, cherry tomatoes, and when in season, fresh honey. These products reach families, grocers, restaurants, and other commercial businesses throughout Havana. All while growing an educational platform to teach visitors and inspire new generations of farmers.
Supporting Finca Marta’s contributions and commitment to the Earth is just one of the ways Tribe Caribe and our guests can directly support the Cuban people.
